Election Stress!

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” ~William James

Election Stress

Well, Election Day is upon us here in the United States!  No matter which side of the political aisle you are on, you may be experiencing election-related stress.  If so, you are not alone.

The American Psychological Association estimates that 77% of Americans are very stressed about the future of our country; 69% of Americans have experienced significant physical and mental stress over the presidential election; and 74% are concerned about violence following the election.

Mental Fitness Tips

Personally, I share the same concerns.  So, I thought I would send a quick note with some mental fitness tips to help get you through the days ahead as we anticipate the results.

  • Listen to your body. Muscle tension, stomach upset, headaches, and insomnia are just some of the signs of stress.
  • Write in a journal.
  • Stay socially connected – preferably in real life!
  • Limit the time you spend on social media.
  • Limit your exposure to the news.
  • Avoid being drawn into politically-charged debates.
  • Agree to disagree.
  • Stick to your personal boundaries.
  • Continue to exercise and eat healthy whole foods.
  • Practice yoga or do some light stretching.
  • Watch or listen to comedy.
  • Listen to uplifting music.
  • Challenge your thought process.
  • Give yourself a pedicure.
  • Take a walk in nature.
  • Control the things you can & accept what you cannot control.
  • Get plenty of solid sleep.
  • Stay hydrated.

Clearly, the above list contains recommendations that apply to our everyday lives.  The suggestions can be especially helpful during this exciting, albeit nail-biting, week.
