Spring Freedom!
Well, Spring has sprung! It’s a glorious season of rebirth, renewal, rejuvenation, and freedom. Nature begins to bloom again and we get outside more. As we experience more warmth and light, we may also experience renewed energy, hope, and faith.
Personally, I view Spring as a period of transition. We begin to “thaw out” from winter and shed our many layers of winter clothes. We adjust our activities to take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather. And, we prepare for the hot summer days ahead.
It’s a good time to reflect on our goals, habits, and lifestyle. What’s been working for you? What needs to be shed as you move forward? What new goals and habits would be most beneficial as we approach Summer? Who do you need to forgive and, perhaps, spend less time with?
Button-Pushers
In my last newsletter, I talked about the “Theater of The Mind” and how allowing other people to push our buttons can seriously derail our best efforts. Although we cannot control what other people do, we can control our reactions to what they do. As hard as it is to realize sometimes, no one can make you feel negative emotions without you allowing it. (This is a mental fitness skill that needs to be learned and developed over time. Coaching can help!)
For Passover and Easter, many of my readers will be gathering with family and friends to celebrate. This can be a double-edged sword. While the social connection and sense of belonging is good for your health, it can also be challenging to spend a holiday with people you may only see a couple of times per year. Family members seem to have a special knack for pushing our buttons; don’t they? Add in a dinner conversation about world events or politics, and you have a recipe for tension.
While some individuals are simply “clueless” and have no idea when they have upset another person, other individuals seem to derive great pleasure in bullying and offending others. These are the people who really test our muster. In the heat of the moment, it can be difficult to recognize that the problem lies within the bully. Although it may feel as if you’ve been kicked in the stomach, the “attack” is not really personal. It has more to do with some issue the other person has within themselves.
Easter & Passover = Hope & Freedom
Easter and Passover symbolize hope and freedom. As the holidays wrap up and spring continues to unfold, I hope my readers will also take time to reflect on their mental fitness. It is possible to experience freedom from the thoughts and beliefs that may have held you back for quite some time!
